What I Believe

1 – Food is For Our Enjoyment

God gave us good gifts in this world for our enjoyment. Food is one of those gifts, and it’s more than just a source of energy, it’s a way we can appreciate God’s natural gifts.

2 – Healthy Living and Good Food Should Go Hand-in-Hand

In America, there is almost an unspoken (and sometimes spoken) idea that healthy food tastes bad, and you can either eat healthy or you can eat well. It shows in the jokes we make about healthy eating (and worse, the jokes made about health-conscious eaters), and in the way we “go on a diet” and have “health kicks.”

There’s a time when a short-term, specific diet is necessary, usually when a health professional recommends it. But for the most part, we should aim to live a healthy life, not six months. Focusing on adding more nutrient-rich foods to our diet, instead of restricting ourselves from the things we “can’t” eat.

I want to rewire the view people have toward healthy eating completely. Kids’ idea of “healthy food” shouldn’t be the 3 carrots their parents force them to eat if they want dessert. I want to help people see that health is much more than counting calories; it’s a lifestyle filled with a balance of delicious foods paired with practices to care for your physical, mental, and spiritual health.

3 – Anyone Can Cook

Cooking is a valuable life skill that everyone should be able to do to some extent. On this website, I aim to teach more than just recipes. Through my recipes and other posts, I want each reader to learn how to cook. Because cooking is so much more than recipes.

If all you want is to cook good food, that’s perfectly fine, and that’s what recipes are for. Follow a good recipe, and you’ll cook good food. But I want to encourage people to dig deeper, to learn why cooking works the way it does, I want to teach people to cook without recipes, to make their own even.

4- Food Connects Cultures

No matter where you go on Earth, people eat. But, everywhere you go the food is different, shaped by years of history, tradition, and innovation. Every dish tells a story, and every time you take a step into another cuisine, you take a step into another culture.

When I’m enjoying a bowl of kare raisu I can’t help but think of all the factors that played into landing that dish on my plate. It starts with India’s climate and nature, which God hardwired for the growth of a multitude of spices. Unfortunately, the story takes a dark turn when the British Raj takes control of India, forcing millions of Indians into poverty.

The British took a liking to Indian curry (although they used this word to describe a vast variety of dishes, that technically aren’t all curry, but that’s a story in itself). It became a staple of the British Navy, and when they arrived in Japan, they introduced the island nation to curry powder.

The Japanese taste is reflected in the resulting curry, a sweeter, milder, and thicker variation of its Indian ancestor. Now curry is so ubiquitous in Japan that it’s an unofficial national dish, and there are countless varieties.

This is only one of many examples of how food changes and crosses cultures over time. Some dishes have stories that stretch back farther than anyone knows, others are much more modern inventions. But that only adds to the excitement.

Food is a bridge between all people, it allows us to appreciate a small part of a much larger culture. Something we may never completely know or understand, but we have the opportunity to enjoy and respect.

So I encourage you to take a step into the unknown. Try a dish you can’t pronounce, or make it yourself, and take a moment to appreciate the diversity God created.

The QB Cooks Team

Graphic Designer, Most Loyal Taste Tester, and Dish Hunter Extraordinaire

Hudson has been a member of the team since day one, and a fun-loving supporter even longer. He is my go-to when trying out something completely new and unfamiliar because he’s not afraid to try new food or give his honest opinion. Hudson was born and raised in the U.S. and is pursuing a college degree in ministry, with a minor in business. Hudson enjoys tennis, theater, choir, running, guitar, making mischief with his friends, and engraving things on his Glowforge. He is the graphic designer for QB Cooks. Hudson is always on the lookout for new dishes (like, literal plates and bowls) that can be featured on QB Cooks, searching far and wide for the best pieces in the land!

Professional Hand Model, Name Come-er Up-er With-er

Parker and I also go way back, and he’s been with me through thick and thin. I hand-picked him as my professional model for any shot that requires the food to be held, torn, or drizzled. He’s also the genius behind the name of this blog, QB Cooks. Parker enjoys playing tennis, hanging out at the Cozy Corner, cereal, and football. A lot. He’s a diehard fan of the Bengals (I know, who is this guy?). Go Chiefs.

If you make a dish from QB Cooks, please take pictures and share your experience, I’d love to hear from you.
